4 Safety Rules to Review with Your Kids This Summer

For many families, the summer season is a time for playing outdoors and enjoying the warm weather. However, summer can also have some dangerous situations that parents should be aware of. The following are four safety rules to reiterate with your kids to keep them safe during summer play.

Always Wear Sunscreen

Kids should be aware of theimportance of wearing sunscreen when playing outdoors. Sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher should be reapplied every two hours and immediately after leaving the water. There are many different sunscreen formulations to choose from. Aerosol sprays can be convenient since they're easy for kids to reapply on their own.

No Swimming Without an Adult

Swimming is a great way to cool off in the summer as long as your kids know basic water safety.Roughly ten people a day die from drowning, and drowning is a leading cause of death for kids aged 1–14. This type of tragedy can be avoided if your children know always to have an adult present while they're swimming. Also, keep a fence with a locked gate around your pool for added security.

Prevent Dehydration

Hydration is essential when you're out in the sun for hours. Drinking water is usually the best option for maintaining proper hydration. If your child is playing sports, you may prefer to give them an electrolyte drink. If you're spending the day at the beach or other outdoor space, be sure to pack a cooler with enough drinks for everyone. Know the signs of dehydration so that you're prepared to deal with any situation that may happen.

Trampoline Safety

Most kids love trampolines, but they can be dangerous if they're not set up properly. Be sure yourtrampoline has a safety net around the outside as well as padding over the springs. Teach your kids the proper way to use the trampoline and discourage attempts at tricks and stunts. It's also a great idea to have a rule where only one child jumps at a time to prevent potentially hazardous collisions on the trampoline.

Many people love summer as it provides plenty of time to enjoy outdoor activities. When sending your kids outside to play this summer, be sure to reiterate the importance of summer safety. Following these basic rules can allow your kids to spend time outdoors while staying happy, healthy and safe.
